steady food suPPLy in Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia would not have begun due to the major advancements in Agriculture in Mesopotamia. Two great advancements in the Steady Food Supply are the Floodgates and Canals. Because Mesopotamia lied between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the fields got flooded and damaged all the crops. They put the Flood Gates around the crops and when the crops needed water they just opened up the flood gates and let the water in. As well as canals, canals are not floodgates but it controlled the water amount the plants got. Another great advancement was the plow. The plow was pulled by oxen and would make holes so the people could plant the seeds. These are all great advancements but this is not really what Mesopotamia is known for.
Irrigation
Now with all of those technologies we lead up to the greatest one of all, Irrigation. As stated Mesopotamia is greek for “Land Between the Rivers.” Living between these two rivers is not easy. It floods and damages all of the crops. So the Sumerians created sort of a watering solution. Like we put sandbags around our rivers so they do not flood in the summer the Sumerians put rocks around the rivers to prevent it from flooding. Because of this crops were rarely damaged or overwatered. They were also really good for people to eat. Also a civilization was born.
